Professional Development Courses for Teachers in 2010-2011

Courses free of charge – all costs are covered by British Council Romania

Preparing students for Cambridge exams

These are 6-hour courses dedicated to teachers who wish to train their students to successfully get their Cambridge ESOL diploma in the following exams:
·         YLE
·         KET
·         PET
·         FCE
·         CAE
·         CPE
·         BEC
·         ICFE
·         ILEC
·         IELTS
·         TKT
The courses are structured in four modules focusing on the methodology of teaching the four skills, with a view to exams requirements.
They aim to:
·         raise the participants' awareness of the format of the four papers;
·         discuss techniques that will improve the students' performance;
·         discuss assessment of written papers and of oral performance;
·         provide activities and teaching tips for teachers to use with examinations classes;
·         encourage the participants to share their own ideas about preparing students for exams.


For the following courses participants are required to pay a fee of aprox. 125 RON for a 8 hour course (fees are negotiable or can be paid in instalments)

1. Creative writing
given by Cristiana Faur

Writing tends to be the bugbear for both students and teachers. Generating ideas is obviously a crucial part in the writing process. Let yourself guided into this process. It can be fun and very rewarding.

2. Events management
Given by Reka Vadasz

The ten-hour course Events Management addresses primary and secondary-school teachers as well as other people who are in charge of organising different types of events: school festivals, meetings, conferences, workshops and many other activities specific to education.
The course is structured in three modules:
1. stages in organising a public event
2. identifying and forming the teams
3. describing different types of events
Highly interactive, the course is based on a booklet to be used as a resource by the participants.
Part of the course is an evaluation task with a written and an oral component.

3. Teaching ENGLISH through songs
Given by Monica Stoica

A young teacher and trainer in love with teaching will share with you practical activities she used successfully with her students. You will have the chance to learn how to use poems, games, songs in a variety of ways and for a variety of teaching purposes.

4. Getting Ready for Teachers’ Exams
given by Monica Andrei, Bianca Popa and Monica Ralea
This 30-hour course. It is a must for every teacher preparing to sit a promotion exam for teachers (definitivat, gradul 2). The 10 sessions deal with essential aspects of ELT (teaching vocabulary and grammar, teaching the four skills, teaching culture, lesson planning, classroom management) that are tackled in an interactive way allowing the teachers to experience some concrete activities and reflect upon them in order to internalise the underlying principles. Lots of teaching materials suitable for a range of levels are provided. The course is also a firm path towards the new Cambridge exam for teachers, TKT.

5. Mentoring
given by Doina Fleanta, Elena Gardescu. Ada Bena
Mentoring is a skill.  Although being a good teacher is a condition for becoming a good mentor, we cannot assume that a good teacher will automatically be a good mentor.  Mentoring skills need to be explored, discussed and most of all practised and reflected on.  This is the very aim of this 48-hour course.

6. NLP for teachers
given by Monica Ralea

This is an 8-hour course dedicated to teachers (and not only) interested in personal development (setting up and  achieving goals, accessing personal resources, making the best out of oneself), coaching as well as developing their interpersonal communication skills. The course covers topics such as Maps and Filters, State and Anchors, The Metamodel, Working with Presuppositions and Metaphors etc. The teachers will get involved in practical activities easy to transfer to the classroom environment.

7. Teaching young learners
given by Elena Gardescu

A 9-hour course for those who teach English as a foreign language in primary school (1st and 2nd grade).
In a highly interactive manner it deals with the psychology and behaviour of very young learners as well as ELT methodology issues. It also aims to develop the teacher's own creativity in using and inventing resources, in teaching poems, action rhymes, dialogues, songs, stories, games.

8. Steps To Success – 300 RON

Given by Camelia Arhip, Anda Botoiu, Catalina Gazi

A 36 hour interactive course for newly qualified teachers of English covering topics like Classroom skills and competencies, Presentation and practice issues, Assessment. Observation, Feedback, Using materials and resources, Personal and professional development.
